Apple patents foldable iPhone with self-healing display

by Henry Brown

Apple has applied for a patent on a foldable smartphone with a self-healing display. As planned, the screen will be able to fix dents and scratches without user intervention.

According to the patent, the display will be coated with an elastomer layer that has highly elastic properties and viscosity. Such a layer will lose and regain its shape to protect the sensitive mechanisms of the device. The recovery process itself can be accelerated by exposure to light, heat and electric current.

Whether Apple will ever release a similar smartphone is unknown. In 2018, Apple patented a flexible phone that, in theory, could compete with current solutions from Samsung, Motorola and Royole.
