The PC market, boosted by the shift to remote work, study and entertainment due to the pandemic, continued its explosive growth in the second quarter of 2021. According to the estimates of experts of the analytical company Canalys, shipments in annual terms increased by 13% and reached 82.3 million units. Analysts clarify that they counted desktops, laptops, including Chromebooks, and workstations, but did not count tablets.
Notebook and mobile workstation shipments rose 15% year over year to 66.7 million units, while desktop shipments rose 6% to 15.6 million units. Demand is said to remain strong thanks to the corporate segment, while the consumer segment is experiencing a noticeable decrease in demand. Component shortages remain a problem for the industry, but shortages and backorders are on the decline.
All five of the leading PC makers have managed to maintain supply growth. In first place, with 24.3% of the market, is Lenovo, which showed an impressive annual growth of 14.7%. For the third quarter in a row, she manages to ship more than 20 million personal computers. HP retained its second place with 22.6%, but increased shipments by only 2.8%. Dell increased shipments by 16.5% and moved closer to HP, taking 17.0% of the market. The top five also includes Apple and Acer, which shipped 6.4 and 6.0 million systems in the quarter, which corresponds to 7.8% and 7.3% of the market, respectively. Note that Apple increased shipments by 19.8%, Acer – by 20.9%.
