Apple Mac sales have almost halved. But the PC market as a whole sank very strongly.

Computer sales continue to fall at a catastrophic pace, and Apple Mac shipments have collapsed by almost half. Such data can be seen in the latest IDC report.

Apple Mac sales have almost halved. But the PC market as a whole sank very strongly.

According to the report, in the first quarter of 2023, the PC market decreased from 80.2 to 56.9 million computers, i.e. by 29%. Sales collapsed for all market leaders, but Apple suffered the most for some reason. At the Cupertino giant, shipments fell 40.5% to 4.1 million units. But the company retained fourth place, continuing to lag far behind the top three.

Apple Mac sales have almost halved. But the PC market as a whole sank very strongly.

In itself, the decline in sales in the PC market can be considered normal, as the market is simply returning to pre-Covid indicators. For example, in the first quarter of 2019, 59.2 million PCs were sold, which is not much more than now. But last year, sales due to the pandemic were much higher than normal, so against this background, current figures seem to be a huge drop.

Artificial intelligence will create new business opportunities and lead to economic growth that will create new jobs, according to IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna.

Krishna said he believes the net effect of AI on employment will be “job creation” rather than job destruction, although it will replace humans in certain jobs.

On Sunday, IBM announced plans to invest $100 million in a joint research project with the University of Tokyo and the University of Chicago in an attempt to build a 100,000-qubit quantum supercomputer in 10 years.

AI will lead to job creation, and commercial applications of quantum computers will begin soon, according to the head of IBM

“Japan has accumulated a lot of experience in the field of quantum computing, accumulated over decades,” said Krishna. — Physicists, engineers and materials scientists are working on different aspects. Many people may not realize how deep Japan is in these areas.”

He predicted that quantum computing technology would advance step by step as part of a collaborative project in the next decade, with commercial applications starting in three to five years: “This is the time when people will be solving some problems that are probably too expensive or impossible for conventional computers. To do this, we need between 4,000 and 10,000 qubits.”

In quantum computing, a qubit, or quantum bit, is the basic unit of information, just like a binary bit is in conventional computers.
