Apple in talks with CATL and BYD over batteries for its electric vehicle
Citing reports from “four people with knowledge of the matter,” Reuters said Apple is in talks with Chinese battery manufacturers CATL and BYD to supply batteries for its electric vehicle. The informants preferred to remain anonymous, as it is not yet clear whether an agreement will be reached.
According to two sources, Apple has given potential battery suppliers a prerequisite to build manufacturing facilities in the United States.
CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer and already supplying batteries to major automakers including Tesla, is reluctant to build a plant in the United States due to political tensions between Washington and Beijing and high costs. The reaction of BYD, the fourth-largest battery manufacturer, to Apple’s demand is unknown. It is also unknown if Apple is in talks with other battery manufacturers.
Earlier it was reported that some “revolutionary” technology for the production of batteries may find application in the planned for release of an electric car by Apple. There is no information about whether the negotiations with CATL and BYD concerned their own technologies or Apple’s development. At the same time, according to the aforementioned four informants, Apple is in favor of using lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are cheaper to manufacture, since they use cheap iron instead of expensive nickel and cobalt.
BYD has unveiled the updated 2023 BYD Han electric sedan, which is priced between $30,400 and $43,400. The 2023 version has several improvements and updates, including the new Glacier Blue color.
Alongside the 2023 Han EV, the 2023 Tang DM-i (PHEV) was introduced. In the first 4 hours, 8196 pre-orders were issued for cars. A source inside the company told CarNewsChina that about 5,000 pre-orders were placed for BYD Han 2023.
BYD Han EV 2023 is equipped with atmospheric lighting, heat pump air conditioning, improved sound and heated steering wheel for the flagship model. The entire series also features aluminum alloy suspension as standard.
The car supports 5G networks, iPhone smartphones as a key, as well as the blind spot monitoring function for the Noble equipment with a range of 605 and 705 km. Transmission options remain the same, with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions available. The front-wheel drive version has a maximum power output of 244 hp and a 0-100 km acceleration time of 7.9 seconds.
The front-wheel drive versions of the BYD Han EV 2023 are available in 506 km, 605 km and 715 km versions. The total power of the all-wheel drive version is 516 hp, and the acceleration time to 100 km/h is only 3.9 seconds. The power reserve for the all-wheel drive version is 610 km.
The previous version of the model was released at the beginning of last year.

Changan revealed the cost of different versions of the Changan Yida budget sedan – and it turned out to be even a little cheaper than previously reported.
There are three complete sets, but all of them with a 1.5-liter engine of the Blue Whale family with a capacity of 170 hp. and 7-speed “robot”. The simplest version is priced at $12,750, the mid-range version costs $14,100, and the top one is only $15,700. It is one of the most affordable and spacious sedans in its category in China. And from other pluses, one can note modern design and good equipment already in the database.
Changan Yida dimensions are 4770 x 1840 x 1440 mm, and the wheelbase length is 2765 mm. Judging by the photo, the space in the rear seats is almost like in a business class car.
Already in the base, Yida has a multifunction steering wheel, a digital instrument panel with a 10.25-inch screen and a media system with a vertically oriented 13.2-inch screen, cruise and climate control. The top version, of course, has all the possible options, including a panoramic roof, a surround view system, adaptive cruise control, electrically adjustable and heated seats, and wireless phone charging.

In China, sales of a new version of the Chery Tiggo 7 Plus crossover, a plug-in hybrid, have started. This Tiggo 7 Plus is more economical than conventional gasoline (average consumption is 5.95 liters per 100 km), can travel up to 80 km on pure electricity (in accordance with the WLTC methodology) and has a decent range of more than 1000 km.
As part of the power plant of the crossover, a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, two electric motors and a DHT transmission that provides three operating modes. The total power is 326 hp, and it’s not just a sum: in some scenarios, the ICE helps drive the electric motors, so that for short periods of time, all the power is sent to the wheels. However, the dynamics cannot be called outstanding – up to 100 km / h, the crossover accelerates in 7 seconds.
The capacity of the traction battery is not named, but it is noted that it is charged from 30 to 80 percent in just 25 minutes. Interestingly, despite the small battery capacity, the car allows you to share energy – it can power various devices (or the whole house), while the output power is 3.3 kW.
The plug-in hybrid Chery Tiggo 7 Plus received two screens with a diagonal of 12.3 inches, the third screen is a projection one. At the heart of the hardware platform that manages the various crossover systems is the Qualcomm SA8155P SoC. The crossover supports 18 driver assistance technologies as part of the Level 2.5 autopilot system. And here, for the first time for Chery cars, a 540 ° viewing system.
In addition, the car is equipped with a Sony audio system with 8 speakers, atmospheric lighting with 64 colors, and 50 W wireless charging for a mobile phone.
As for the price of the car, it ranges from $21,800 to $24,250.
