Apple is preparing to expand its range of smart speakers. According to well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new version of HomePod will be released in the fourth quarter of this year or in the first quarter of 2023.

Kuo believes that the new model will not be drastically different from the current one, because Apple allegedly still has not figured out how to succeed in this market.

Recall that the original HomePod column failed in the sale and was discontinued. Apple has actually replaced a large and expensive speaker with a smaller and more affordable one. But HomePod mini was introduced back in the fall of 2020, which means its life cycle will be two years or more.

True, Kuo did not actually specify which version of the HomePod he was talking about. Third-party sources believe that the release of an updated HomePod mini is more likely.

It is also worth recalling that, according to various sources, Apple is preparing a hybrid HomePod and Apple TV, equipped with a FaceTime camera. But when such a product will be released is still unknown.

The company calls the novelty the first ultra-thin set-top box with Windows and an OLED screen. The dimensions here are 224 x 89.5 x 26.7 mm with a mass of 395 g. For comparison, the dimensions of the Steam Deck are 298 x 117 x 49 mm with a mass of 669 g, but the Nintendo Switch OLED has dimensions of 175 x 104 x 50.7 mm with a mass of 315 g.

True, there is also a version of Air Pro, the thickness of which is increased to 29.6 mm, and the weight is 450 g.

The novelty is available in many different configurations. The base version, which can be ordered for $500 through a crowdfunding campaign, is equipped with a Ryzen 5 5560U APU, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. There are versions with the same APU, but 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB SSD. There is also a modification based on the Ryzen 7 5825U with 32 GB of RAM and an SSD from 512 GB to 2 TB. The top console can be purchased for $1,000.

In any case, the performance of any version will be significantly lower than that of the Steam Deck, as well as consoles based on the Ryzen 6000U.

It is also important that retail prices will differ very little from the prices of the fundraising campaign.

The rest of the parameters include a 5.5-inch OLED screen with Full HD resolution, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a battery with a capacity of 28 or 38 Wh (second for Air Pro versions), a fingerprint scanner (except for the most basic version).

The Indiegogo campaign has already raised around $255,000, nearly four times the amount the manufacturer is asking for.

Fraudsters have learned to force customers to change SIM card

VTB has uncovered a new method of telephone fraud, as a result of which a user can unwittingly provide access to his online bank to outsiders. Fraudsters call under the guise of employees of the support service of a mobile operator and inform the subscriber about the hacking of his personal account or phone. In order to prevent the user’s personal data from being exposed to the public as a result of the “hacking”, he is asked to dial a special USSD command on the phone, consisting of a combination of numbers, symbols and a phone number. As a result, the subscriber himself changes the settings so that calls and SMS are forwarded from his device to the number of scammers.

The scammers may then call again to report that the problem has been fixed, but in fact they receive codes from messages and can steal money from the user’s account by gaining access to their online banking. VTB experts recommend installing caller IDs on your smartphones that will allow you to distinguish a real call from a fraudulent one, or not to answer calls from unknown numbers. It is also important to be vigilant and, at the slightest doubt, end a conversation that seems suspicious. According to VTB, in May, the number of customer requests for calls from intruders increased by 70% compared to April this year, exceeding 640,000.

An unusual small but very thick laptop with an ortholinear

The era of netbooks is long gone, and there are very few mobile PCs on the market with screens smaller than 10 inches. The new MNT Pocket Reform is one of those.

But in fact, this laptop was not created at all for the sake of compactness, because, despite the small screen, the dimensions here are very far from optimal, and the thickness can terrify those accustomed to modern ultrabooks.

From the photos you can already understand what the device looks like and why compactness is not at the forefront here. Dimensions are equal to 200 x 126 x 45 mm, and the weight is not indicated at all.

In addition to the unusual design, another highlight of the novelty is the ortholinear keyboard. Not everyone is comfortable using these, which should be considered before buying.

Further unusual solutions do not end there. The heart of the novelty is not an Intel or AMD processor at all. It is based on a platform based on SoC NXP i.MX8M Plus with 4 or 8 GB of RAM. The platform is removable, so that it can be replaced with something else. The company itself also offers several other options as options:

  • NXP Layerscape LS1028A
  • Raspberry Pi CM4
  • Pine SOQuartz RK3566
  • FPGA AMD/Xilinx Kintex-7

In addition, a platform from the MNT Reform model can be inserted into the PC.

The seven-inch screen is characterized by Full HD resolution. There are Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 adapters, a 4G or 5G modem (optional), up to 128 GB of flash memory, an SSD slot, a microSD slot, and an 8000 mAh battery.

The body can be made from anodized aluminum or recycled plastic to choose from. The set of ports includes a pair of USB-C, Industrial Ethernet and micro-HDMI.

Given the platform, it is clear that Windows is out of the question. The PC supports Debian GNU/Linux, Arch, Ubuntu, Void, Plan 9, Genode and OpenBSD.

No pricing details yet, but pre-orders will begin in July.
