With the introduction of the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs, Apple has made some high-profile performance claims in terms of graphics capabilities. Notebookcheck has conducted a quick analysis that shows that these claims are likely to be justified.
According to Apple, the Apple M1 Max is capable of delivering approximately 70% faster processor performance over the Apple M1. GPU performance increased by about 4x compared to Apple M1. We have already reported the results of testing the platform in Geekbench.
Apple emphasized in its keynote that its new SoCs retained the M1 designations as they are enlarged versions of the Apple M1. Notebookcheck has released an estimate of the GPU performance of the new platforms, assuming that Apple did not increase the clock speed of the new GPU cores in the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs or make any other changes. Based on this, Notebookcheck made the following teraflops performance (TFLOPS) estimates:
- M1 8 cores – 2.6 TFLOPS;
- M1 Pro 14 cores – 4.5 TFLOPS;
- M1 Pro 16 cores – 5.2 TFLOPS;
- M1 Max 24 cores – 7.8 TFLOPS;
- M1 Max 32 cores – 10.4 TFLOPS.
The performance of all Apple platforms is very impressive, especially considering how much less power they consume compared to solutions from Intel, Nvidia and AMD. Even at peak performance, the M1 Max SoC consumes 100W less than a high-end laptop with a discrete GPU, as Apple noted during the presentation. However, the 32-core GPU in the M1 Max delivers identical performance to the Nvidia RTX 2080 desktop GPU (10.07 TFLOPS) and the PlayStation 5 GPU (10.28 TFLOPS). For a laptop, this is a truly amazing result.
Linux gamers can now take advantage of the “free” performance boost, too. Nvidia DLSS added to Proton
Linux gaming is becoming more and more complete. Nvidia has finally added its DLSS supersampling technology to Proton 6.3-8. For the first time, we learned about such intentions of the company back in the summer.
As a reminder, Proton is an open source tool designed for use by the Steam client. Proton allows Windows games to run within Linux.
Thus, Linux gamers will now be able to enable DLSS in supported games and get impressive performance gains.
Proton also received support for 24 new games:
- Mafia II
- Sol Survivor
- Age of empires 4
- Breath of Death VI
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Monster Energy Supercross 2
- TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge
- TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2
- Monster boy and the cursed kingdom
- FIA European Truck Racing Championship
- Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered
- Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slicked Precipice
- Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition
- Monster energy supercross
- Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
- Game dev tycoon
- Assassin’s creed
- The riftbreaker
- RiMS Racing
Netflix has a new hit: it overtook the “Squid Game”
Another South Korean series Netflix set a record for the most watched and overtook the previous leader. This is the series “Call of Hellbound” (Hellbound), which surpassed “Squid Game” (Squid Game) and became the most popular on Netflix.
According to FlixPatrol analysts, Call of Hell was the most watched Netflix TV series in the world on November 20, topping the ratings in over 80 countries within 24 hours of the show’s release. It was directed and written by Yong Sang Ho (“Train to Busan” and “Train to Busan 2: Peninsula”).
The Call of Hell series is a completely original project by Netflix, the plot of which is about supernatural beings who take people to hell. A pilot episode aired at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival in September.
The Squid Game, which premiered on September 19, was ranked # 1 on Netflix’s most watched TV series for 46 consecutive days. In October, 142 million households in 94 countries watched the show. This earned Netflix about $ 900 million.
Earlier this month, “Squid Games” director Hwang Dong Hyuk confirmed that filming for the second season was imminent.
SPC Gear Viro Infra headset is addressed to game lovers
The SPC Gear brand, chosen by SilentiumPC to promote products aimed at gamers, is the VIRO Infra on-ear headset. According to the manufacturer, these headphones “not only provide high-quality sound, but are also incredibly comfortable and durable.”
The headphones are complemented by a removable microphone and a built-in remote control that allows you to quickly adjust the volume, mute and unmute the microphone. The durable metal headband is encased in a soft leatherette shell, and the perforated material of the ear cushions provides “thermal comfort” to the ears. The ear cushions are filled with foam, which provides sound insulation due to a snug fit.
The headphones use 50mm drivers. The range of reproducible frequencies is declared equal to 20 – 20,000 Hz. The body of the cups is made of damage-resistant plastic, which is additionally reinforced with metal panels. Despite the solid construction, the earbuds weigh only 256 grams.
The directional microphone makes the user’s voice stand out from the surrounding sounds.
Thanks to a standard 3.5 mm jack, the novelty is compatible with PCs, smartphones, consoles and other devices. It costs 38 euros.
