Apple employees skeptical about next device to replace iPhone

The Cupertino-based company is expected to introduce an augmented reality headset in a few months. However, some employees question whether the device makes sense for Apple.

When Apple unveiled its augmented reality headset about five years ago, Jonathan Paul “Jony” Ive, the former chief designer, impressed an audience of 100 of the company’s top executives with a concept video. In the video, a man in a London taxi, who was wearing an augmented reality headset, called his wife in San Francisco.

But now, as the company prepares to unveil the headset in June, enthusiasm for Apple has given way to skepticism, as eight current and former Apple employees, who wished to remain anonymous, said at once. There are concerns about the device’s price of around $3,000 and doubts about its usefulness.

Some employees left the project due to doubts about its potential, as described by three people familiar with the progress of work. Others were fired due to lack of progress on some aspects of the headset, including the use of Apple’s Siri voice assistant.

Even Apple executives have doubts about the product’s prospects. It was developed at a time when morale was undermined by a wave of departures from the company’s design team, including Quince himself, who left Apple in 2019 and stopped consulting with the company last year.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the company’s plans for future products.

Back in 2021, Tim Cook said that the headset should replace the iPhone in the next ten years. The famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made the same statement.
