Apple Chip Line Will Have 32-Core Processor

Apple is developing several new processors for its Mac devices at once. The line of chips will have processors with 8, 12, 20 and 32 cores. About it reports edition “Bloomberg”.

Sources of the publication said that the company plans to release a family of processors in 2021 – the exact date is still unknown. They will be able not only to catch up, but also to overtake the latest Intel chips in performance, the interlocutors say.

According to Bloomberg, almost all Apple computers and laptops will be equipped with new processors. So, the company is going to release a line of MacBook Pro and all-in-one iMacs, which will have chips with 20 cores. At the same time, this processor will be designed for top versions – the younger ones can get modifications with 8 or 12 cores.

The 32-core solution should appear in the flagship Mac Pro – according to Bloomberg, thanks to this, Apple’s PC will be able to outshine the 28-core Xeon from Intel, which is now installed in the top-end Mac Pro modifications. According to preliminary information, the new monoblock will become twice as compact, including thanks to the modernization of the cooling system. However, unlike the others, the processor with 32 cores is unlikely to appear before 2022, according to the sources of the publication.

In addition to processors, Apple wants to abandon third-party video cards – now the company’s devices are equipped with solutions from AMD. The publication notes that the company’s engineers are already developing graphics subsystems with 16 or 32 cores, and in the flagship versions of laptops and PCs, video processors with an even larger number of cores – 64 or 128 may appear. Sources suggest that they may become several times more productive than AMD graphics accelerators that are installed in current Mac computers. In addition, there is a possibility that such a number of cores will be located not in an integrated accelerator, but in a discrete one.

The company has taken such bold steps after the success of its first in-house ARM processor, the M1, with 8 cores, which Apple unveiled in November along with the new MacBook Air, Pro and desktop Mac mini, according to sources. The next two processor lines that the company is going to bring to market will be more ambitious than industry observers expected, and Apple wants to complete the transition to its own chips by 2022.

The advent of such processors from Apple could shake up an industry that has long depended on Intel. Despite the fact that Intel now gets less than 10% of its revenue from equipping Apple with its products, immediately after the news was published in Bloomberg, its shares on the New York Stock Exchange fell 2.9%. Apple will be able not only to get rid of its dependence on Intel, but also to increase its share of the PC market.
