In an interview with the Swiss edition Digitec, the head of OM Digital Solutions (as the photo business of Olympus is called after the change of ownership) spoke about its plans. He confirmed that the commitment to the Micro Four Thirds format will be maintained, with no plans for full-frame cameras.
Sandro Rymann, who worked at Olympus for ten years, also provided some details related to the change of ownership. According to him, the sale was accompanied by a significant reduction in staff, but all those laid off received adequate compensation. At the same time, a significant number of personnel and all the company’s developments were retained. The European branch now employs about 200 people – about half the number before the sale. It is important that the R&D department has been retained. This indicates that the new owner believes in the future of the company and that it can be profitable.
The spin off from Olympus could have a positive effect in the sense that the unit was formerly part of the medical technology group and remained marginal. On the one hand, this allowed him to work, being unprofitable, and on the other hand, it prevented him from quickly reacting to changes in the market. It is assumed that simplifying the management structure will also improve its efficiency.
The Micro Four Thirds will focus on those who benefit from its main advantages – lightness and compactness. According to Riemann, these are the ones that he shoots while traveling and on the street. For example, he takes pictures of birds and other wildlife, and also enjoys macro photography and landscape photography.
The next camera will be presented “in the coming weeks and it will not be the last in this fiscal year.” As for the Olympus brand, the company will be able to use it for several years – longer than originally anticipated.
