Amazon.com said it has ordered 1,800 Mercedes-Benz electric vans for its European delivery fleet. The move is part of a plan to transform the world’s largest online store into a carbon neutral enterprise by 2040.
Most electric vehicles from Daimler AG’s passenger cars and vans division will enter service this year. The order includes 600 medium-sized eVitos and 1,200 larger Mercedes-Benz eSprinters. This is the largest order for Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles to date. It is noteworthy that 800 of the ordered cars will travel on the roads of Germany. The second largest batch of 500 vehicles will be shipped to the UK.
The source recalls that in 2018 Amazon became the largest buyer of non-electric Mercedes Sprinter vans, purchasing 20,000 vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz today joined the Climate Pledge launched by Amazon last year. Participants in the initiative promise to achieve zero carbon emissions at their enterprises by 2040.
