Microsoft has been gradually improving the built-in Notepad app in Windows in recent years, and now it’s finally getting a character counting feature.
In the new test version of Windows 11, the Dev and Canary channels now display the number of characters at the bottom of the Notepad window, much like counting the number of words in a document in Microsoft Word.
The Microsoft Windows Insider testing program team explained in a blog post:
When text is selected, the status bar displays the character count for both the selected text and the entire document. If no text is selected, the character count for the entire document is displayed, so you always have a clear idea of the length of the document.
This is the latest addition in a line of changes to Notepad in 2023: the app recently added a new autosave option that lets you close a document without being confronted with a window prompting you to save every time. Microsoft has also added tabs and dark mode to Notepad.
World’s first Windows-based augmented reality gaming kit unveiled
At MWC Barcelona 2024, Tecno introduced Pocket Go, a new augmented reality gaming set.
The manufacturer said that Pocket Go is the world’s first augmented reality gaming kit based on Windows. The Pocket Vision headset improves interaction with the device and gives a new gaming experience.
An important advantage is the compactness and lightness of Pocket Go: the device is 30% lighter and 50% smaller compared to other portable Windows game consoles. This is the first device to provide high frame rates in AAA games. It is equipped with an 8-core 16-thread processor with a turbo frequency of 5.1 GHz, and a replaceable 50 Wh battery guarantees long gaming time without interruptions.
Pocket Go also includes a universal control system, Tecno Smart Box, which allows you to control not only your gameplay but also other smart devices in the ecosystem.
Notably, Pocket Go can work well with Tecno Mega Mini T1 Windows PC as well as Tecno smartphones. However, the company did not specify whether the Pocket Go will also be compatible with other Android or iOS phones.
iOS 18 will finally bring a new design this year, but macOS changes aren’t expected until 2025
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 18 will likely include some design changes, but a refreshed look for macOS could be a year or two away.
Gurman said Apple is working on a redesign of iOS “as early as this year.” There have been rumors that iOS 18 will feature some design elements inspired by VisionOS, and while Gurman agreed that iOS could borrow some design elements from VisionOS, he doesn’t expect a “complete overhaul that mirrors VisionOS.”
Garman previously said that Apple’s senior management described iOS 18 as “an ambitious and compelling operating system with many new features and a different design.”
As for macOS, Gurman said Apple has begun early work on design changes for the operating system that we will be able to evaluate in 2025 or 2026. The platform last underwent a major redesign with macOS Big Sur in 2020.
Apple is expected to announce iOS 18 at its annual WWDC developer conference in June.
Windows will have its own equivalent of DLSS and FSR. Microsoft DirectSR technology will be presented in a month
Microsoft DirectSR (Super Resolution) technology will be presented at the GDC 2024 event, which starts in a month.
Let us remind you that the technology became known a couple of weeks ago, and now the information has appeared directly on the GDC website. DirectSR is an image scaling technology similar to Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR, but applied to Windows as a whole.
There are no technical details yet, but DirectSR is likely to be the most universal solution that will be compatible with all modern video cards. Actually, the same AMD FSR technology is also open and works on different adapters. In the last leak regarding Super Resolution in Windows, we saw mention of both games and applications, but it is not yet clear in which programs and how this will be implemented.
