Advertising platform LoopMe and analyst firm IDC have released the results of a global consumer survey conducted to assess how mobile gaming activity will change after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey has shown a sharp increase in interest in mobile gaming since the start of the pandemic – 63% of respondents reported increased game time, especially in countries hit hard by COVID-19.
The survey covered 3,850 participants in the US, UK, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Singapore. These countries were selected in such a way as to obtain a mix of countries with high rates of COVID-19 infection and countries with low rates of COVID-19 infection. Data have been normalized to reflect the distribution of the population by country. Respondents were asked about their current gaming activity, as well as their intentions to spend time playing after the pandemic has largely subsided.
More than two-thirds of respondents reported playing mobile games in recent months. A correlation was found between the increase in time spent on gameplay and local pandemic effects (in particular, the death rate from COVID-19 per capita). Three out of four people surveyed said they played for fun or just to pass the time, and 4% said they played to engage in “safe” virtual social interaction. Only 6% did not play before the pandemic. This appears to be related to the age of the “recruits” prior to the start of the pandemic.
According to the survey, it is expected that after the pandemic is largely over (presumably in most countries this will happen at the end of 2022), 75% of the increase in activity in mobile games caused by the pandemic will continue indefinitely.
Largely due to the effects of the pandemic, the global player base of players playing on smartphones or tablets grew by 12% every month in 2020 compared to 2019. As a result, as of the end of last year, the number of mobile gamers in the world reached 2.25 billion people.
