A top gaming laptop versus a desktop PC with similar specs. How big is the difference between such devices?

How powerful is a modern top-end gaming laptop compared to a desktop PC? As you know, in the current generation of mobile video cards Radeon and GeForce such adapters are not identical to desktop cards of the same name.

In particular, the Radeon RX 6800M is a copy of the Radeon RX 6700 XT, only with a lower TDP. The source decided to compare these two accelerators in games and programs in order to understand how a laptop can replace a desktop PC in these tasks.

For starters, both cards are based on a Navi 22 GPU with 2560 stream processors, 12GB of GDDR6 memory, 192-bit bus, and 96MB of Infinity Cache. For the Radeon RX 6800M, the GPU power is declared equal to 145 W with the possibility of increasing through a number of technologies, and for the RX 6700 XT, the power of the entire card is 230 W. Of course, with such a difference in power limits with identical characteristics, the desktop card should be faster.

And tests show it is faster. But the difference in performance in games is ultimately small. On average, at 1440p this is only 10%, and in some games it is only 2-6%. At the same time, in some games, the mobile RX 6800M bypasses the mobile RTX 3080 and is almost always faster than the mobile RTX 3070.

But with applications, the situation is much more interesting. Here the source compared not only video cards, but also CPUs. In this case, the mobile Ryzen 9 5900HX and the desktop Ryzen 7 5800X, which are very similar in terms of parameters.

Here the source did not display the average value, but we see that in some cases the difference is colossal and amounts to 50-75%. But still, in most applications, it is in the range of 2-10%.

As a result, we can conclude that in most scenarios, the mobile PC lags behind the closest desktop PC by a modest 10%, and this is impressive. Yes, there are applications and games where the gap is larger, and sometimes it is much larger, but still these are more likely exceptions.

Needless to say, in normal times, the desktop side has not only more flexible build and upgrade options, but also price. However, now the prices for desktop video cards are such that sometimes it is more profitable to buy a laptop.

As it turned out, the standard options are available for purchase on the day of the start of sales. However, if you choose a larger drive, the PC will have to wait until at least early July.

But if you order a MacBook Pro with 24 GB of RAM, the wait will be delayed. Apple promises to deliver such PCs between August 3 and 10, that is, in a month and a half.

Supply issues may be related to both component shortages and capacity constraints due to the escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Third-party sources believe that a similar situation may occur with the new MacBook Air on M2.
