A new way to track the location of a smartphone has been discovered: it uses a Bluetooth vulnerability

Researchers at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) have found a way to track a phone based on its Bluetooth signal. Scientists have focused on devices using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This technology was designed to reduce the power consumption of traditional Bluteooth at the expense of low bandwidth and low range. BLE uses only 1% of the power required for traditional Bluetooth. This allows BLE-enabled devices to stream continuously.

Instead of trying to break the encryption of the data within the signal, the researchers focused on identifying the unique characteristics of the broadcast radio signal. All wireless transmitters have signal interference that is unique to each device. This interference is carried through the signal and can be isolated from the data, creating a unique marker (or digital fingerprint).

The researchers found that the rate of false positive and false negative results with this method was less than 5%. And on some devices, such as the Pixel 5, the false negative rate was 0%. This means that there has never been a single case where a digital fingerprint was incorrectly identified.

At the same time, shortcomings were immediately announced that do not allow the full use of this tracking method. Some BLE chipsets have similar interference, making identification much more difficult. In addition, digital fingerprints can vary with temperature, limiting the exploitation of this vulnerability.

If you are still worried about this vulnerability, then you just need to turn off Bluetooth when you do not need it.
