A new type of fraud is successful: users are offered to “insure” funds on a “single interbank account”

The attackers offer to “insure” the funds that are allegedly kept by the interlocutor on a “single interbank account with the Central Bank”. Thus, they try to convince the interlocutors of the need to protect funds after the compromise of personal data.

According to VTB, several malefactors work with each client in the new fraudulent scheme. First, they call clients, ostensibly on behalf of law enforcement agencies, reporting a “statement from the Central Bank” about the compromise of personal data. Fraudsters specify that the write-offs were made not from the account of a specific bank, but from a single intra-bank account. Access to it, according to the legend of scammers, is only available to bank employees, who are suspected of attempting fraud.

Further, the call is transferred to an “employee of the security department of the Central Bank, who specifies which bank the client is served at, what products he uses, checks account balances and even the amount of salary. It is at this moment that fraudsters offer to insure the total amount on a single account, which will allow you to return all the money in case of successful theft of funds by fraudsters. To do this, they convince the client to transfer all their money to a “safe account”.

Head of Digital Business Department, Senior Vice President of VTB Nikita Chugunov explained:

The legend of a “single account in the Central Bank” appeared among the scammers a little earlier this year and, unfortunately, is a success with them. Clients in a stressful situation may believe that they really can have such an account, and are ready to make every effort to protect it. Therefore, the offer to quickly take out insurance that will protect all the client’s money is the very trick that attackers seek to catch their victims with.
