A new factor that could hinder the transition to electric vehicles has been named

South Korean battery giants for electric vehicles are facing a new factor that the source said could slow the global race in the electric vehicle market.

The three major South Korean manufacturers, which control a third of the global electric vehicle battery market, told Reuters they all have a severe shortage of researchers and engineers.

LG Energy Solution (LGES), SK On and Samsung SDI are among the world’s top six battery manufacturers and supply these products, among others, to car manufacturers such as Tesla, Volkswagen and Ford Motor.

The explosive growth in demand for batteries quickly depleted the workforce. Companies simply have nowhere to find technicians with the qualifications needed to develop advanced technologies such as solid-state batteries. In between, IHS Markit predicts that the global battery market will triple to nearly $ 90 billion by 2025.

The Korea Battery Manufacturers Association estimates that South Korea, where the battery manufacturing sector has doubled in the past five years, is now short of nearly 3,000 specialized university graduates. For comparison, LGES, SK On and Samsung SDI have a total of 19,000 employees.

The source notes that the Korean crisis reflects a shortage of personnel and on a wider scale. The European Battery Alliance’s planning group, for example, says the EU needs to focus on retraining and skills development because the local battery industry will need 800,000 new employees by 2025.
