A completely new type of RAM. Dell unveils CAMM modules that could become the new industry standard
Dell has unveiled the 2022 Precision line of laptops, and there’s a lot to look forward to.
It’s worth starting with the most unusual. For new laptops, the company has developed a new form factor of the RAM module. It is called CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module).
The main idea is to save space. One module actually combines two sets of memory chips, that is, it replaces two SO-DIMMs. At the same time, the CAMM module is 57% thinner, and the double-sided version can be characterized by a capacity of 128 GB. In this case, one module will replace four 32-gigabyte SO-DIMMs.
Another interesting detail is that for modules with a capacity of 16, 32 and 64 GB, a frequency of 4800 MHz is declared, but a module with a capacity of 128 GB will operate at a frequency of only 3600 MHz, which is very low for DDR5.
Interestingly, despite the fact that CAMM is a proprietary development of Dell, this form factor will not be exclusive to the company. The manufacturer notes that he created the format together with Intel and various manufacturers of RAM. The company believes that CAMM can become the new industry standard.
Initially, CAMMs will be available in the Dell Precision 7770 and 7670 Workstation Notebooks before the end of the current quarter.
As for the rest of the parameters of laptops, we can single out high-performance Alder Lake-HX mobile processors with 16 cores in top models that have not yet been presented by Intel itself. Also, laptops can be equipped with GeForce graphics cards up to RTX 3080 Ti. The line includes the 17″ Precision 7770 and the 16″ Precision 7670.

AMD is indeed going to launch Ryzen Threadripper 7000 processors in the second half of this year. Previously, these were just rumors and leaks, and now this was announced by an Asus representative.
Interestingly, he mentioned this in a video demonstrating the work of the Intel Sapphire Rapids WS platform, the processors of which are currently competing with the Threadripper 5000, but soon they will have to compete with the Threadripper 7000.
Threadripper 7000 will switch to a new socket and a new Zen 4 architecture. This will bring them support for DDR5 memory, probably PCIe 5.0 interface. In addition, the top-end Threadripper 7000s are expected to be 96-core, just like their sister Epyc Genoa.

The cost of the basic version of new items with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory is $190. The variant with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash memory is priced at $220. Sales in China will start on March 24.
