A clear indicator of how much the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series are more important to AMD than graphics cards and processors. Many times more plates are allocated for the first

The shortage in the video card market affects both Nvidia and AMD. But the next generation of Radeon graphics cards are much less on sale than GeForce adapters.

As the latest figures show, the reason is likely to be found in the consoles. Recall that the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft are based on AMD APUs, and they are of higher priority for the company.

To begin with, it is worth indicating the area of the crystals of different APUs, CPUs and GPUs from AMD.

  • PlayStation 5 APU – 308mm2
  • APU Xbox Series X – 360mm2
  • APU Xbox Series S – 197mm2
  • Zen 3 Processor Chiplet – 81mm2
  • APU Renoir / Cezanne – 156mm2/ 175 mm2
  • GPU Navi 21 – 520mm2

As you can see, the Navi 21 GPU used for the top-end Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards is much larger than the APUs in the new consoles and is many times larger than the consumer APUs.

The area of a 300mm wafer is about 42,000mm2… Thus, it is easy to calculate how many crystals for a particular product will fit on one plate. And if you know how many of these or those products have been sold recently, you can calculate the number of plates allocated for this.

The source released the following indicators:

  • PS5: about 56,934 plates
  • Xbox Series X: about 25,641 platters
  • Xbox Series S: About 7009 Plates
  • CPU Zen 3 (Ryzen 5, 7, 9): about 6249 platters
  • CPU Zen 2: 3000-4000 platters
  • APU Renoir / Cezanne: about 2016 plates
  • GPU Navi 21: about 6172 plates

The data is given for about six months. As a result, it turns out that almost 90,000 platters were allocated on the new generation consoles, processors received more than 10,000 platters, and video cards – only slightly more than 6,000 platters.

It is clearly seen that AMD bought many times more platters for consoles than for CPU, APU and GPU combined, which we see in the form of almost complete absence of RX 6000 video cards on sale.
