The specifications of the Kestrel supercomputer have appeared on the Web, which stands out for a very unusual configuration.

The system will be installed at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), where it will replace the current Eagle system. The new supercomputer will be created by HPE and will boast a performance of 44 PFLOPS, although against the backdrop of a new record holder, this seems to be a modest figure.

But we are primarily interested in the fact that Kestrel will combine Intel and AMD processors. More specifically, Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs from the Sapphire Rapids generation and AMD Epyc CPUs from the Genoa generation. All these processors have yet to come out.

Different processors will be used in the supercomputer as part of different subsystems. Intel CPUs will serve as the basis. The system will include 4608 52-core processors. And 96-core AMD CPUs will be used in special acceleration blocks in conjunction with Nvidia Hopper adapters. In total, there will be 132 such blocks, each with two processors and four GPUs.

The energy efficiency of the new plant will be 10.4 GFLOPS per watt, more than double that of the Eagle, but the same latest Frontier is rated at 50 GFLOPS per watt.

As you can see, the source says that within this line, AMD will finally launch processors with more than eight cores in the mobile segment. More specifically, the Ryzen 9 7980HX will have 16 cores, the Ryzen 9 7900HX will have 12 cores, the Ryzen 7 7800HX will have 8 cores, and the Ryzen 5 7600HX will have 6 cores. That is, these APUs will be as similar as possible to desktop ones. True, AMD’s Ryzen mobile processors have always had a monolithic crystal, and that is why they were maximum eight-core. It turns out that Dragon Range will be chiplet. Perhaps, physically, these will be the same desktop APUs, only with reduced power limits. For example, the source indicates the maximum frequencies in the range of 4.8-5.0 GHz or slightly higher. In addition, such APUs will receive iGPUs with 256 stream processors.

AMD will also have a Phoenix line with Ryzen 7000HS processors. These APUs will be more familiar with six to eight cores. The Ryzen 9 7980HS, Ryzen 9 7900HS, and Ryzen 7 7800HS will each have eight cores, while the Ryzen 5 7600HS will have six. In this case, the former will receive an iGPU with 1536 stream processors, and the latter will have a core with 768 stream processors.

The older iGPU, as previously stated and according to the source, will operate at frequencies of 2.6-3.0 GHz, which will provide incredible performance for the integrated graphics core – 9.2 TFLOPS. This could be the level of the mobile GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q.

Despite the smaller number of processor cores, such APUs can also be chiplet-based. The source believes that there will be three crystals: a processor, an iGPU, and some kind of chiplet associated with the memory subsystem. Perhaps it will be Infinity Cache memory.

Chinese insider Ice Universe, who leaked a lot of reliable information about different smartphones, has published the first images of the iQOO 10 smartphone.

In this line, the manufacturer uses the design that we have already seen in Pixel and Poco smartphones. The back is divided into two parts, which are made of different materials.

Today we already reported that iQOO 10 will be the first phone based on Dimensity 9000+. In addition, a version based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 will also be available to customers.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration has postponed the launch of the Capstone spacecraft from June 27 to June 28. The reason for the postponement of the launch is to conduct a “final check of the systems” of the launch.

The space department indicates that the Capstone trajectory scheme is such that the device will arrive in its lunar orbit on November 13, regardless of the launch date “in the current period” – which is any day before July 27.
