200 MP in mid-range smartphones? OmniVision is preparing its second 200-megapixel image sensor

Samsung introduced its 200-megapixel sensor last year (it’s Samsung ISOCELL HP1 in 1/1.22-inch optical format), and now OmniVision is responding with a second 200-megapixel sensor.

We already wrote about the top 200-megapixel OmniVision OVB0B sensor: it is characterized by an optical format of 1/1.28 inches, the pixel size is 0.61 microns. Its parameters are close to Samsung HP1. As for the second, its optical format is 1/1.4 inches, the pixel size is 0.56 microns. It will support pixel grouping technology to capture more light. The CMOS sensor will be manufactured by TSMC using a 28nm process and will start production in the second half of the year.

Obviously, next year there will be a lot of 200-megapixel smartphones, and not only top ones. Well, the first 200-megapixel model should be released in the summer – it will be Motorola Frontier.

Arm has unveiled the Cortex-X4 supercore, which will be used in the next generation of flagship single-chip systems.

Arm is talking about a 15% performance boost, which is a lot for a single generation. In addition, Cortex-X4 is the most efficient Arm super-core ever.

Interestingly, in the press release dedicated to Cortex-X4, most of the text concerns not quite the newest core. Arm also unveiled its most powerful CPU cluster ever. In this case, we mean the possibility of combining Cortex-X4 with the new Cortex-A720 and A520 cores.

The basis of the cluster is the new block DynamIQ DSU-120, which allows you to cluster 14 processor cores. Of course, this is not required for smartphones, but it is a good start for platforms aimed at PC. As an example, Arm gives a cluster of 10 Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720. The block also supports L3 cache up to 32 MB and new intelligent power saving modes.

Separately, Arm mentioned a cluster with a core formula of 1 + 5 + 2. It is this configuration that is attributed to the SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

According to the international standard IEEE Std1789-2015, when the screen flicker frequency exceeds 3125Hz, stroboscopic flicker does not pose a danger to human eyes. The current PWM frequencies of 2160 Hz, 1920 Hz and 1440 Hz, which are widely used in flagships, are still noticeable.

The Honor 90 series screen has a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, supports 1.07 billion colors and 10-bit color depth. The Honor 90 Pro uses a 6.78-inch screen.

Honor 90 Pro is equipped with a 200-megapixel 1/1.4-inch optical format main camera that supports 16-pixel binning with an equivalent pixel size of 2.24 microns. It also features a 12MP ultra-wide-angle macro lens and a 32MP telephoto portrait lens with 1x, 2x and 2.5x modes.

On the front of the Honor 90 Pro is a 50MP portrait dual camera that supports 100° ultra wide-angle shooting. The minimum focusing distance can be as short as 2.5 cm.

The smartphone received a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 single-chip system, as well as a 5000 mAh battery that supports 90-watt charging.

Honor 90 received a 6.7-inch screen, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, a 200-megapixel camera, the same battery and 66-watt charging.

The iPhone 15 is about to enter mass production, so Foxconn is actively recruiting and increasing bonuses.

According to official data from Zhengzhou, starting from May 29, bonuses for new employees will be increased, with a maximum bonus of about $500 per person. Previously, the bonus for new employees from May 22 to May 28 was up to $425 per person.

Smartphones will receive Dynamic Island in all models, a USB-C connector and Apple A17 SoC. The periscope camera with 6x optical zoom will only be on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

According to rumors, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will receive a Sony IMX903 sensor with an optical format of 1 / 1.14 inches.
