Swedish company SeaTwirl has signed a contract with operator Westcon to build and deploy its first 1MW vertical-axis floating wind turbine off the coast of Norway.

SeaTwirl describes its design as simple and reliable. It is a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), a rotating cylinder, which is different from the horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) that are commonly used today. VAWTs are a promising technology for several reasons.

First, they can receive and use wind from all directions, so they do not need heavy and expensive systems to guide them into the wind, as HAWTs do. Secondly, generators can be installed at or below the waterline. Conventional HAWT windmills require mounting this heavy gear right on top of the support towers where the main axle is, creating a heavy-top design that requires extreme tower strength and huge subsurface counterweights to keep them upright. This means more materials and more costs.

Thirdly, they can be placed much closer to each other than HAWTs, since they create a minimal wake in the wind. HAWTs must be spaced farther apart, which reduces the profitability of a particular area.

In the SeaTwirl design, three VAWT blades are rigidly mounted on a long buoyant pole with a low center of gravity and a heavy mass at the bottom that acts as a keel. The entire pylon rotates, driven by blades that catch the wind, while the generator collects the energy and sends it back to shore via cables.

Since the main turret itself is afloat and held more or less vertical by the keel, the generator bearings do not have to bear the weight of the entire structure. Thus, they can be smaller, lighter and cheaper. As with other VAWT designs, maintenance should be much easier and cheaper than with a HAWT because the parts that need work are located at sea level, not on top of huge towers. Thus, they can be serviced without the need for expensive cranes.

SeaTwirl is currently preparing to build its first 1MW version. It will build its first S2x turbine near Bok in Norway. It is expected to enter service in 2023 with a trial period of about five years.

The S2x will be about 30 times larger than the first S1 prototype. It will reach a height of about 55 m above the surface, and its weighted central rod will sink to a depth of 80 m. They plan to install such windmills in places with a depth of at least 100 m. The windmill will turn off the power if the wind speed exceeds 25 m/s (90 km/h ), but it will withstand even extreme wind speeds up to 50 m/s (180 km/h). The company says that the service life should be about 25-30 years.

The Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) promised by SeaTwirl for a 1-MW floating turbine will be below $50 per MWh, which is roughly in line with the current state of affairs in land-based wind generation

The configuration also includes a USB-C port and a standard headphone jack. The OS is Android 12 and the hardware platform is MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G.

The dimensions of the 18th model of the Redmi line are 163.99 x 76.09 x 8.9 mm, weight is 201 grams. There are three versions of the phone: 4/128 GB for $180, 6/128 GB for $210 and 8/128 GB for $240.

According to insider Yogesh Brar, who at one time provided correct data about the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 will not receive any important differences from its predecessor. It will have the same 8 GB of RAM, the same 128 or 256 GB of flash memory, the same based camera with 50 and 12 MP sensors. The front camera will be new, but it’s an 11-megapixel sensor from the Pixel 6 Pro.

SoC Tensor G2 will also be new, but so far all data indicates that the processor part of this platform will be the same as that of the current Tensor, only with slightly increased frequencies. The screen will retain the resolution and frame rate of 90 Hz, but, unexpectedly, will become a little smaller: 6.3 inches versus 6.4 inches. Apparently, Google heard users and journalists who said that there is not much difference in size between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and both feel large. True, it is not a fact that reducing the screen will lead to a decrease in size.

As for the battery, its capacity will allegedly be 4700 mAh, which is only slightly more than 4614 mAh for the Pixel 6.

As a result, the situation with the Pixel 7 will be similar to the iPhone 14, when there are very few differences from its predecessor, and there are no serious ones at all.
